Today in class we finished watching the philosophy video with Hunt Green. After, that we worked on our project for Ancient Greece. We worked on the slides and made up some new topics.

  • The first olympics attended in the city of Athens
  • There were 240 participants
  • 13 nations
  • 43 events
  • Ever since this is when the winter and summer olympics have been separately.
  • There are theories that the olympics might have even started in the 9th or 10th century.
  • The Stadium of Ancient Olympia was a holy place for the Ancient Greeks, where all the sports activities were dedicated to the God of Zeus
  • Seat capacity of 20,000 spectators and all seats were made from mud
  • The Stadium would also host the Heraia Games which were the games for women, held in honor of the Goddess of Hera
  • Racetrack od 200 meters long and 30-34 meters wide
  • Straitening and finishing lines are indicated by 2 stone marks which are 193 meters apart

  • All athletes competed without any attire.
  • Wrestlers and pankration (a sort of mixed martial art which combined boxing and wrestling) competitors fought covered in oil
  • Corporal punishment awaited those guilty of a false start on the track
  • There were only two rules in the pankration  no biting and no gouging
  • Boxers were urged to avoid attacking the on display male genitals
  • There were no points, no time limits and no weight classifications in the boxing
  • Athletes in the combat sports had to indicate their surrender by raising their index fingers – at times they died before they could do this
  • Boxers who could not be separated could opt for klimax, a system whereby one fighter was granted a free hit and then vice-versa – a toss of a coin decided who went first
