Today in class we took notes on pg 357. All I did was write definitions for the bolded words.
Middle Ages- the gradual decline of the Roman Empire ushered in an era of European history
Monasteries- religious communities that were built by the church
Secular- a worldy, power involved in politics
Carolingian Dynasty- the family that would rule the Franks from 751-987
Charlemagne- known as Charles the great, ruled a kingdom, that left his Frankish kingdom to his two sons
Franks- Germanic people that held power
-Also the Middle Ages spanned the years 500-1500. During these centuries, a new society slowly emerged. It had roots (1) the classical heritage of Rome, (2) the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, and (3) the customs if various Germanic tribes
- The Germanic invaders who stormed Rome could not read or write
- In 590, Gregory I, also called Gregory the Great, became pope
- In 496, Clovis led his warriors against another Germanic army
- By 511, Clovis had united the Franks into one kingdom
- In the 600-700's, monks made beautiful copies of religious writings, decorated with ornate letters and brilliant pictures
